Vehicle Pursuits
When to pursue, radio calls, spacing, lead and secondary, risk assessment, termination, and the limits on roadblocks and intervention.
A pursuit is the most dangerous thing a trooper does. It is justified only when the risk of letting the suspect go is greater than the risk of the chase.
Mandatory
- ·Do not start a pursuit for a minor infraction. A broken tail light is not a chase.
- ·A terminated pursuit stays terminated. Stop chasing and keep broadcasting.
- ·No reckless pursuit behavior that endangers uninvolved players without a roleplay justification.
Criteria for initiating a pursuit
- ·A pursuit is justified for a serious offense (felony-level in server terms) or a suspect who presents an ongoing danger.
- ·A pursuit may be justified for a violent offender fleeing a stop, a stolen vehicle, or a hit-and-run with injuries.
- ·A pursuit is not justified for a minor traffic violation, a failure to stop for a broken light, or a driver who simply annoyed you.
- ·Before you commit, ask: is catching this suspect worth the risk to the players on this road right now?
Justified: a suspect who rammed a trooper and flees at speed.
Not justified: a sedan that ran a stop sign and is driving normally.
Broadcasting the pursuit
- 1Announce: unit, pursuit, direction of travel, vehicle description, and reason.
- 2Request a supervisor for oversight.
- 3Give a position update at every junction, exit, or major landmark.
- 4Call out driving behavior: speed, weaving, wrong-way, or attempts to ram.
"Dispatch, NHP-4, in pursuit westbound on the interstate, silver sedan, failing to yield, hit-and-run suspect."
"NHP-4, westbound past the county line, suspect accelerating, light traffic."
"NHP-4, supervisor requested."
Spacing and coordination
- ·Keep a safe following distance. Tailgating a fleeing suspect at speed causes collisions.
- ·Do not box the suspect with multiple cars unless a supervisor authorizes it and the speed is safe for it.
- ·During the pursuit, the channel is the pursuit. Everything else waits.
- ·Keep updates short: direction, road, and behavior at each junction.
Lead and secondary units
- ·The first unit in the pursuit is lead. They call direction and driving.
- ·A second unit takes secondary and runs ahead to control traffic or set up for a stop.
- ·Additional units hold back unless dispatched to a specific task (spikes, blocking, intercept).
- ·If the lead unit loses the suspect or needs to break off, call it and let the secondary take lead cleanly.
Pursuit risk assessment
- ·Reassess continuously. A pursuit that was justified a minute ago may become unjustified as conditions change.
- ·The risk to uninvolved players is the deciding factor, not your pride.
Risk factors that push toward termination
Roadblocks and vehicle intervention
- ·Roadblocks require supervisor approval and a clear roleplay reason.
- ·A roadblock must give the suspect a chance to stop. A roadblock set to guarantee a crash is not a roadblock, it is an attack.
- ·PIT or vehicle ramming is permitted only where server rules allow it, and only when safe.
- ·No PIT on motorcycles. No PIT on a vehicle carrying passengers. No PIT at high speed.
- ·Spikes require supervisor approval and a radio call before deployment.
If a tactic is not clearly allowed by server policy, do not use it. Assume it is not allowed until a supervisor confirms otherwise.
Supervisor oversight and termination
- 1A supervisor is required for any pursuit and for spikes or intervention.
- 2The supervisor monitors risk and may order termination at any time.
- 3When terminated, broadcast it clearly so every unit stops responding.
- 4After termination, broadcast the last known direction and description so units can watch.
"NHP-4, pursuit terminated, last seen westbound at the county line, silver sedan."
"All units, NHP-4 pursuit terminated, return to patrol."
When a suspect escapes or is apprehended
- ·If the suspect escapes: broadcast the last direction and description, return to patrol, and file a report. Do not rage.
- ·If the suspect is stopped: secure the vehicle, order the driver out, and take them into custody per the Arrests section.
- ·Coordinate with the city department if the stop is inside city limits.
- ·File the pursuit report with the reason, the path, the tactics used, and the outcome.
