Patrol Operations
Starting and ending a shift, lights and siren use, routine patrol, and responding to calls.
Starting a patrol
- ·If you cannot see NHP or your shift option, contact authorized department command or server staff. Do not use another department's shift.
- ·Spawn the approved NHP preset. Do not use personal or off-road vehicles for routine patrol.
- ·Check in on the radio: state your unit and that you are on patrol.
- 1Join the appropriate NSRP ERLC session.
- 2Open Department Commands in the NSRP Discord server.
- 3Run /start shift.
- 4Select the Nevada Highway Patrol department.
- 5Select the appropriate available shift option.
- 6Click Enter.
- 7Confirm the correct shift has started before you begin patrol.
Activating lights and sirens
- ·Use lights and siren only for responses and stops that need them. Routine patrol does not run code.
- ·Lights without siren is acceptable for a slow approach or a traffic break. Full code (lights and siren) is for urgent responses.
- ·Kill the siren a short distance from the scene on a tactical approach.
- ·On a traffic stop, keep your lights on while you are out of the car.
- ·Do not leave lights and siren running after the scene is closed.
Routine patrol and traffic observation
- ·Take a highway or major road and run a route between the junctions players actually use.
- ·Watch for moving violations: speed, reckless weaving, failure to yield, wrong-way travel, unsafe lane changes.
- ·Watch the shoulder for stranded motorists and lane hazards.
- ·Vary your route and speed so you are not predictable.
- ·Call out your position and status as you move.
Proactive enforcement
- ·Stop vehicles for observed violations. Do not invent violations to stop a player you dislike. That is harassment.
- ·A warning is appropriate for a minor first-time issue. A citation is appropriate for a clear or repeat violation.
- ·Grass driving alone is not automatically an offense. Stop only when the driving is genuinely dangerous.
- ·Reckless driving (excessive speed, weaving through traffic, near-misses) is always stoppable.
If you are not sure a violation occurred, let it go and watch. A stop without a real reason is worse than no stop.
Responding to calls
- 1Acknowledge the call, state your unit, and announce your route.
- 2Choose your response priority (Routine or Code 3) based on the call type.
- 3Request a second unit early for collisions, hazards, or any injury.
- 4On arrival, announce you are on scene and give a quick size-up.
- 5Protect the scene, separate the players, and take statements.
- 6Clear the scene on the radio when the incident is closed.
Scene positioning and backup
- ·Park behind the incident to protect the scene and leave yourself an exit.
- ·Angle your car to push traffic away from the work area. Use cones and flares when available.
- ·Position a second unit upstream to slow approaching traffic on a fast road.
- ·Never stand between your car and oncoming traffic without a buffer unit behind you.
Ending a patrol
- ·Do not log off in the middle of an active incident. Hand it to another unit or wait until it is closed.
- ·Reports filed before you log off keep the shift clean.
- 1Clear any active scene and release backup units.
- 2Return to a spawn point and store your patrol vehicle.
- 3Run the end-of-shift command in the NSRP Discord.
- 4File any outstanding reports before you log off.
